The General Assembly passed a provision that would no longer give drivers the option of paying a $500 fee in lieu of getting vehicle insurance. According to NerdWallet, car insurance could cost a 35-year-old living in Northern Virginia over $2,000 a year. Could the IRS audit your tax return? Consumers can bundle vehicle insurance with other types of coverage such as renters' insurance, from the same insurer. Providers may also provide discounts, as safe driving rewards programs offer lower premiums. Shannon Martin, analyst at Bankrate, says recent life changes may also help lower costs. “If you've gotten married, if you've had adult children move out of the home, if you've changed careers and your commute is shorter than before, these changes can lower the rate of your policy without really having to do anything,” Martin told DC
