PROGRESS RAIL Norfolk Southern is teaming up with Progress Rail, a Caterpillar company based in Albertville, to upgrade 96 freight locomotives with more advanced electronic technology, a move Norfolk Southern says will make its trains more powerful, more efficient and longer lasting. The project works by switching older locomotives from direct current systems to newer alternating current, or AC, technology. In simple terms, AC-powered trains get better traction and more consistent power, especially when hauling heavy loads or climbing steep grades. The upgrades are also expected to cut down on wear and tear and reduce maintenance costs across Norfolk Southern's roughly 20,000-mile network. Ryan Stege, senior director of locomotive operations and maintenance for Norfolk Southern, said the project goes beyond cost savings and is an important step toward running a more sustainable railroad.
