A Kaiser Family Foundation study found that around one-quarter of the nation's 13.7M Medicare patients are diagnosed with both heart disease and obesity, which means they could qualify for coverage of Wegovy with the new FDA approval, according to Reuters Medicare Part D drug plans generally don't cover medications to treat obesity alone. The additional FDA approval, however, allows for the drug to be covered if it is prescribed to help reduce cardiovascular event risks in people who are overweight or obese. According to the Kaiser study, some Medicare D plans are already covering Wegovy for heart patients, with wider coverage anticipated in 2025. Of the 3.6M who could now be eligible for Wegovy coverage, around 1.9M are also diabetic and would likely qualify for coverage of Novo Nordisk's Ozempic, Reuters added. Both Wegovy and Ozempic contain the drug semaglutide, which is approved for the treatment of diabetes and weight-loss. The drug's main competitor has been Eli Lilly's
