Novo Nordisk lost its patent over semaglutide, which makes Wegovy and Ozempic, in India. That means the floodgates of generics opened and overnight the price of weight-loss drugs dropped by 80%. There are now over 40 drugmakers making over 50 generic weight-loss drugs. WHAT HAPPENED It's as if Indian pharmaceutical companies were waiting for this day, prepared to flood the market with generic versions of weight-loss drugs. Companies including Sun Pharma, Dr. Reddy's, Zydus, Torrent, Glenmark, Alkem, and Natco have all released their own versions of Wegovy or Ozempic at steep discounts. Dr. Reddy's generic version of Ozempic is priced at INR 4,200. That's $45 a month. There are some that retail at $14. Within days of the semaglutide patent expiring, dozens of Indian manufacturers entered the market, slashing prices by up to 90% and offering monthly treatments that would make Big Pharma's eyes water.
