Middle management bosses are disappearing in the American workplace. With ongoing economic uncertainty and tech advancements reshaping workplaces, companies are increasingly ditching middle management positions—a move termed “The Great Unbossing”—with significant repercussions for the U.S. workforce. Pharmaceutical company Bayer is just one of the giants vowing to slash corporate bureaucracy and let employees manage themselves by the end of 2024. It plans to cut layers of management, restructuring the company with fewer bosses and fewer rules in favor of self-directed teams. Sound radical?
