At the same time, Health Canada has been dealing with a historic backlog of generic drug submissions. Although the department has a target of responding to all such submissions within 180 days, it only hit that target 84 per cent of the time in the fiscal year that ended March 31, according to data reported by The Globe and Mail. In most of those cases where the target was hit, the applications were rejected within days of the 180-day deadline and then accepted after further review.
