Sales declined 6% to 14.4 billion francs ($15.8 billion), the drugmaker said on Wednesday. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg expected 14.6 billion francs. After years of being seen as a research and development juggernaut, clinical-trial failures have left Roche needing to convince investors that it has the experimental drugs it needs to fuel future growth. Investors will be looking for an update on more projects being pared back as Roche continues to review its pipeline, Matthew Weston, an analyst for UBS Group AG, wrote in a note prior to the results. Roche said the first quarter will be the last time it faced an impact from plunging demand for Covid-related products. The company makes diagnostics as well as drugs, and it sold billions of dollars worth of tests in the course of the pandemic. The stock has dropped 6% so far this year.
