What companies get wrong about diversity Some companies embrace diversity, yet don’t know how to integrate newcomers and change the work culture. That’s according to a study recently published in the Academy of Management Journal . Women on male-dominated teams and older employees on young teams grew more prone to absenteeism over time, the study of blue-collar teams at a Swiss company between 2010 and 2016 found. About one in 10 of these newcomers were new hires; the remainder were internal transfers who were new to their teams. The researchers pulled absence data from human resources records. They measured the total number of workdays lost for reasons other than vacation, personal days, maternity leave, military service or training, and they also looked at the newcomers’ gender and age. While these demographic differences didn’t seem to have an immediate impact on absenteeism, the researchers found, they did have longer-term implications. The absenteeism may be related to perceived
