The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) led by Chairman and social media troll Brendan Carr approved on Thursday the largest local TV station merger in U.S. history: Nexstar Media Group's $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna. Carr, in very Trumpian fashion, granted a waiver of the 39% national ownership cap specifically for this transaction, basically nullifying any opportunity to fight a lawsuit over whether they even have the opportunity to do so. Quick refresher: the FCC has operated as an independent regulatory agency since Congress created it in 1934. That changed when Trump signed an executive order requiring agencies like the FCC, FTC, and SEC to align their policies with the White House. The order, which critics say clearly favors Nexstar Media, is another example of the administration exploiting legal gray areas to consolidate control over bodies that were designed to be insulated from exactly that.
