Use Oxford Lane Capital Corp. If You Want To Short CLOs Summary An equity tranche of CLOs is a great tool to take leveraged credit position (leverage could be 10x). Using CEF (vs. ETFs) to short CLOs provides additional benefits (CEF can trade at discount). Oxford Lane Capital is a CEF that invests in the equity tranches of CLO and fits the bill well (i.e., good short candidate). What are collateralized loan obligations (CLOs)? CLOs are essentially a pool of bank loans that were securitized. In other words, a structuring agent (let's say a structured finance desk at a large bank) would collect a large portfolio of senior secured bank loans, put it in a special purpose vehicle (SPV) and have it issue various securities backed by the underlying collateral pool. Those issued securities have specific assigned order of cash flow distribution and loss absorption related to the underlying pool of loans.
