The financial media outlets love a good corporate script, even if the narrative often unravels and leaves analysts duly puzzled. In April 2019, Vicki Hollub, Chief Executive of Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY), almost singlehandedly wrote such a script. At the time, against the conventional wisdom of many market observers and leverage experts, Hollub rammed in a hostile takeover bid for Anadarko Petroleum, a mid-tier U.S. oil and gas company with a massive shale footprint, whose bosses had earlier agreed to a takeover by Chevron (NYSE:CVX) for $33 billion. Despite a less than certain oil price climate, Hollub bid and counterbid no less than four times, raising her offer to $38 billion plus an assumption of Anadarko's debts. With journalists tracking Occidental's every move, including the flight-path Hollub's private Gulfstream jet, she even reached out to billionaire investor Warren Buffett for cash.
