the mouth of the Amazon River, after it received environmental licenses last week , Chief Exploration and Production Officer Joelson Falcao Mendes said late Monday. The license granted by Brazil's Ibama environment agency on Friday was the first since 2013 for Petrobras ( PBR ) to drill in the extensive area that is seen a promising new frontier for oil and gas exploration. The first exploratory well, named Pitu Oeste, will be drilled 52 km from the coast in block BM-POT-17, with operations planned to start in October or November, and the second well, Anhanga, will be drilled nearby. The approval to drill in the area came as Petrobras ( PBR ) also bids to drill at the mouth of the Amazon river on the coast of northern Amapa state, a controversial topic that has divided President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's government.
