The Swiss drug giant also topped first-quarter expectations. "Our operations and product demand remain very stable and strong," Novartis said in a news release. "Mitigating actions helped to ensure minimal disruption to supply chain and ability to meet forward purchasing demand." But Novartis stock slipped 1.5%, near 88.30, in early action on the stock market today . That reflected a 1.3% drop for the broader industry group of pharmaceutical companies in the wake of earnings reports from Dow Jones players Pfizer ( PFE ) and Merck ( MRK ). During the first quarter, Novartis earned $1.56 per share on $12.28 billion in sales. On a year-over-year basis, earnings charged ahead 29% and sales jumped 11%.
