Maybe there’s a more scientific name for this, but whatever label you put on it, the meaning is very much the same: any retailer that positions itself to appeal to the middle market is going to be very much an endangered species. This is not exactly a new idea and it’s been building for years but recent events are confirming the trend as never before. To be successful in American retailing companies must either appeal to a price-oriented value proposition or they have to go after a highly specialized positioning, appealing to a luxury or distinctive customer that isn’t being satisfied elsewhere. And this is one rule of retailing that transcends any distinction between physical stores and e-commerce. It is in fact the first rule of the omnichannel business model.
