On Monday, the company announced regulators approved a state mining permit after years of anticipation. Gaston County will have one of the largest lithium mines in the country. This has been years in the making and didn't come without opposition. The process started back in 2016 when Piedmont Lithium was founded. An executive said the company was essentially formed around this project because of how much lithium is in the area. In 2022, the company moved its headquarters to Belmont and has been working towards building a mine ever since.
