The US economy contracted for the first time in three years to start 2025, as a surge in imports dragged down GDP and prices increased more than forecast. At the same time inflation in the first quarter clocked in hotter than expected. The "core" Personal Consumption Expenditures index, which excludes the volatile food and energy categories, grew by 3.5% in the first quarter, above estimates for 3.2% and above the 2.6% seen in the prior quarter. For the month of March "core" PCE increased 2.6% year-over-year, a step down from 2.8% previously and in line with expectations.
