The trade war’s next casualty: corporate profits President Trump began using tariffs as a tool in trade negotiations in January 2018, and, while these new trade barriers have been the impetus for stock-market volatility ever since, one has had to strain to see their impact on the economy or corporate bottom lines. The U.S. economy grew at the fastest pace in four years in 2018, while earnings growth for companies in the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.69% was 22.7%, the best rate since the financial crisis. Nevertheless, the impact on corporate profits threatens to become more pronounced as the trade war intensifies, analysts and strategists said. “Over the past two months we have seen some significant, negative revisions” of earnings estimates for the second quarter of 2019, Alec Young, managing director of global markets research at FTSE Russell, told MarketWatch, with trade concerns a major driver.
