There is plenty of validity to this argument in that an unprofitable year invariably means declining book value (net-worth) which ends upbeing detrimental to the share price in the long run. Over the short term, things are drastically different. In fact, it is quite common to see unprofitable companies rally aggressively on news of a successful equity raise for example, or a buyout rumor.
