Sotheby's Launches First Jewelry Auctions At New Madison Avenue Headquarters [Forbes]

The auction house purchased the historic 13,000-square-foot property in 2023 and reopened the space to the art and luxury community on November 8. The building previously served as the home of the Whitney Museum, a temporary branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a temporary venue for the Frick Collection. On December 8, Sotheby's will present its first jewelry sale in the space: “A Legacy of Elegance: Jewels from an Exceptional Collection,” a private single-owner auction of 56 lots featuring important signed jewels, including 24 pieces by Suzanne Belperron and 12 by JAR. The top lot is a Boucheron necklace designed as a laurel wreath, set with seven cushion-cut rubies and leaves pavé-set with old mine- and old European-cut diamonds, accented by single-cut diamonds. The branches are composed of knife-edge linking. Six rubies are of Burmese origin and one of Thai origin, all with no indications of heating, according to an American Gemological Laboratories report.
