The AI boom is under threat from the Iran war as helium rationing leads to a shortage of fibre-optic cables. Supplies of helium, used in the production of the cables fitted in AI data centres, have been squeezed in recent weeks, by attacks on Gulf energy facilities Missile strikes on QatarEnergy's Ras Laffan facility and a shipping shutdown in the Strait of Hormuz have hit supplies of liquid natural gas (LNG) production, which is used to make helium. It has led to warnings of a global shortage of vital fibre-optic cables , which rely heavily on the gas during production. Prysmian , the world's biggest fibre-optic cable-maker, said there was a “risk to production across the sector,” while one of the world's biggest helium suppliers, Air Liquide, also warned it was prioritising “critical applications” because of the shortfall.
