For the quarter ended Feb. 29, the warehouse club earned a profit of $1.31 per share, up from $1.25 a year ago, on a 13.1% increase in sales to $1.29B, slightly better than the Street's consensus estimate. Comparable net merchandise sales were 8.8% higher from the same quarter last year, while adjusted EBITDA increased 6% to $84.1M. While operating expenses were higher in FQ2, the loss was more than offset by a $150M increase in sales, resulting in a 25% improvement in net income. Cash and cash equivalents fell 29% to $170M, merchandise inventories were down 6.5%, while short-term debt was reduced by 30%. In addition to upbeat results, PriceSmart ( PSMT ), which operates 54 warehouse clubs across Latin America and the Caribbean, will pay a special dividend of $1 per share on April 30 to shareholders of record as of April 19. The company also plans to open its ninth warehouse club in Costa Rica. The new location is expected to open in early 2025. Shares were up 4%. Recommended
