"At our last meeting, I asked to please not count on any dollars from the mill because it will be contested," Canton Tax Collector Wanda Lurvey told the board. "To set a budget on what-ifs is very dangerous in my book. You need to know what is available today to make an intelligent decision going forward." Her latest warning came at last Thursday's budget work session, and Lurvey had solid numbers to share with the board. "I'm not going to promise you false hope. I can't come in here and paint a rosy picture because it's not," Lurvey said. "I was in tears when I came up with the figures because I love this town." Lurvey explained the extensive research she'd done before breaking the news that Canton's revenue shortfall for the coming year would amount to $1.4 million — the loss coming thanks to the closure of the Pactiv Evergreen mill last June.
