Related news E-commerce platform provider Shopify ( SHOP ) on Tuesday launched a new consumer shopping app supporting the more than 1.2 million merchants that use its services. Shopify stock climbed on the news. Shopify earnings are due May 6. The shopping assistant app moves Shopify further into the consumer space, a strategy also taken by PayPal Holdings ( PYPL ) with its purchase of Honey Science. The Shopify app lets users browse inventory and makes personalized product recommendations . It also tracks packages and provides one-click checkout. An earlier version of the app has been used by 16 million shoppers to track their e-commerce orders. When Shopify earnings for the first quarter are released May 6, analysts expect the company to report a loss of 19 cents a share vs. a 9-cent profit in the year-earlier period.
