And by 2021, most of the world A380 fleet was parked, as COVID-19 quarantines shut down international travel. When routes were open during COVID with a trickle of passengers, it made no sense to fly a giant four-engine, 500 passenger jet with a million pound take-off weight. Not only were smaller planes easier to fill during the hard times of COVID, but they were also much cheaper to operate the great queen of the skies, with a crew of 18 or more. So many experts felt that the end of the A380 was near. A number of A380s were scrapped and cannibalized for parts. Such was the fate of Etihad's first superjumbo, pieces of which are now available as Aviationtag luggage tag s and key rings. But a funny thing happened after the COVID-19 pandemic finally started to die down. People started to fly again.
