Are single-pilot cockpits heading closer to reality on commercial aircraft? getty Single-pilot cockpits are one of aviation's biggest hot potatoes. In some respects, they make sense, helping address labor shortages and airline cost pressures, and, arguably, the technology exists to enable their rollout. But as European research deepens, so do the concerns. Safety agencies, unions, and pilots warn that technology isn't yet capable of replacing the critical redundancy (backup) offered by two trained professionals. Research conducted by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency found the same thing in 2025.
