The restaurant industry darling right now is no question Chili's, which has gifted us a case study on how to successfully execute a turnaround (and then some). Before Chili's, however, there was Domino's, which did the unthinkable in 2009 when it put its executives front and center in commercials to admit the chain's pizza sucked. What's most remarkable about this story is that the pizza chain prioritized consumer feedback, changed its recipe, and worked on all of the supporting business facets, like order accuracy and speed, to support the new product. Around 2018, Domino's passed its largest rival Pizza Hut for most market share in the category. There's been no stopping Domino's since. The company now owns about 30% of market share in the pizza category and has aspirations to get to 50%.
