An Illinois state jury found that Reckitt Benckiser unit Mead Johnson failed to warn consumers that Enfamil carried a higher risk of babies developing necrotizing entercolitis, or NEC, than breast milk. The intestinal disease, which is more prevalent in premature infants, can cause death in 15% to 40% of cases, according to Reuters. Mead Johnson has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the plaintiff lawyers' claims were not supported by science or medical experts, Reuters added. The verdict is the first of hundreds of cases that have been filed against Mead Johnson and fellow infant formula maker Abbott ( ABT ). Over 400 cases involving NEC have been filed in Chicago federal court, with others pending in state courts, Reuters said. Both Abbott and Mead Johnson are based in the Chicago area.
