From Oxford to Dictionary.com, see the 2025 words of the year they chose. On Monday, Dec. 15, Merriam-Webster “slop” as the 2025 Word of the Year. "Slop" is defined as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence," or AI, according to a news release from the dictionary. Merriam-Webster chose the word after seeing a large increase in lookup volume on their site amid a surge of “AI-slop” over the last year. “All that stuff was dumped on our screens,” said Greg Barlow, President of Merriam-Webster. “And the Word of the Year captured it in just four letters. The English language came through again.” Although “slop” was chosen as the word of the year, had a big year, too, the dictionary said. Among them were “gerrymander,” “performative,” “touch grass,” “six seven (or '6-7')", and the ridiculously long “Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg,” that the dictionary said was part of a hit spelling game on Roblo
