The aggressive price cuts at Koodo, Freedom and others come in a month where promotional activity and churn — people leaving one provider for another — are typically low. The deals are likely in response to new subscriptions failing to meet internal targets due to Canada's population growth flatlining in recent months, analysts say. The deals, and the frequency with which they have appeared, “surprised us at the start of the new year when we thought we'd see pricing moving incrementally higher to reflect promised discipline in the sector,” National Bank of Canada analyst Adam Shine wrote in a Monday note to investors.
