A travel agent was arrested for allegedly defrauding clients. Tavia Thomas, 47, accepted money for reservations that were not booked or went unpaid, the Nassau County Police Department said in a Jan. 6 bulletin . The Hempstead, New York, resident was the owner and only travel agent at Destiny Travel. On one occasion in July 2024, nine people paid Thomas more than $35,750 for a Royal Caribbean International cruise departing from Bayonne, New Jersey, according to police. “Upon arrival the victims were notified by an employee that their tickets were fraudulent and that the cruise they booked did not exist,” the bulletin said. Royal Caribbean Group, the cruise line's parent company, did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.
