USA TODAY NETWORK - Florida Explore Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas, featuring one of the largest waterparks and swim-up bars at sea. After spending a year at a rehabilitation center in Spain, the owls have returned to Miami and are in quarantine. Burrowing owls are a threatened species in Florida and are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This is not the first instance of burrowing owls being found on Royal Caribbean cruise ships. A pair of burrowing owls are back in Florida after a year-long adventure that started with them stowing away on a bedazzled cruise to Spain. The owls, which were found hanging out in a densely landscaped area of the towering, 18-deck Allure of the Seas, made the sojourn to Cartagena in February 2025. The expats spent a year overseas before returning to Miami in February. They are currently in quarantine, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
