Column: Price plunge casts doubt over future of U.S. crude futures - Kemp - Reuters 8 Min Read LONDON (Reuters) - The plunge in U.S. crude futures prices for May delivery the day before the contract’s expiry this week will revive questions about the contract’s design and whether it can continue to serve as a useful benchmark. The U.S. light sweet crude oil futures contract has already been relegated to a regional benchmark, with most pricing outside North America linked to Brent, which is more representative of prices in the seaborne global market. But if contract expiries remain disorderly, there is a risk that the U.S. crude futures contract will lose its role as a regional benchmark and become merely a local price for the delivery location at Cushing. To maintain the contract’s usefulness as a broader benchmark, the exchange needs to review both the physical delivery system and the process for trading in the run up to settlement.
