Sitting down with her markers and filling a page with drawings. “Doing the things I want to do,” said Brooklyn, 14, a ninth grader from Athens, Alabama. “And … no homework.” That's the dream for any teen. But for Brooklyn, who lives with spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, a rare genetic condition that affects muscle strength and movement, the freedom to choose how she spends her time matters even more. While SMA has shaped parts of her life since infancy, her days today are centered on much more than a diagnosis. They are built around routine, creativity and finding a treatment that fits into her life — not the other way around. “I like to do art,” Brooklyn said. “I like to play video games and color a lot.” Her love of creativity runs deep.
