LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Rio Tinto has donated US$1.5 million to the Icelandic Red Cross to support the people and community of Grindavík in Iceland, who have been impacted by months of volcanic eruptions.Since December, a series of volcanic eruptions has left 3,800 people homeless and damaged the community’s water and electricity supplies. Residents of Grindavík and neighbouring communities continue to feel social and economic impacts from these unprecedented events.In the coming weeks, the Icelandic Red Cross will announce details of a project built around Rio Tinto’s contribution to provide support for impacted people and enhance the resilience of the community.
