The board's Legislative Program Committee is expected to decide whether to send letters to the county's congressional delegation in support of the borax mine in Boron. There is some hope that could lead to direct financial assistance for the company. Operated by English-Australian multinational company Rio Tinto, the mine employs an estimated 1,000 people to produce refined borate representing about a third of the world's supply. Borates are used to make everyday products ranging from solar panels and semiconductors to detergents and ceramics. Last year the federal government added boron to its list of critical minerals because of its limited and vulnerable supply, lack of suitable substitutes and use in defense applications such as boron carbide armor, nuclear control rods and high-strength composite materials used in aerospace and military systems.
