Rivian Adds Lidar Sensor To Upcoming R2 EV For Autonomous Driving [Forbes]

At the EV startup's Autonomy & AI Day at its Palo Alto, California offices, Rivian announced the introduction of lidar equipment into its sensor suite. As part of the Thursday event, CEO RJ Scaringe and top executives unveiled an in-house silicon chip for its Gen 3 autonomy platform for the lidar sensor to help power hands-free advanced driving. “It's a massive leap forward with R2 vehicles,” Scaringe said on stage to kick off the day. The lidar sensor will be an option for the upcoming R2 smaller electric SUV due on the streets in 2026. The current all-electric Rivian models, R1T and R1S , only have camera and radar sensors. By the end of 2026 the sensor suite on the R2 will include 11 cameras, five radars and one lidar. Rivian declined to disclose its sensor suppliers. Rivian execs said this is the first time that a third sensor is part of the mix.
