Whether the recent ratcheting up of tension over Greenland marks the collapse of Nato, even after Donald Trump withdrew his threat of tariffs, I will leave to the experts. All I can say is that I wouldn't trust the US and its mutual defence pact with Europe as far as I could throw it, which isn't very far. Investors have certainly cottoned on to this stark reality for the last couple of years. European defence stock prices have skyrocketed, and every month seems to bring the launch of yet another defence fund investing in either European or global defence stocks. The bigger question is whether what's planned by increasingly anxious governments is enough – and whether the surge in spending is already reflected in the price of defence stocks. Let's lay out the knowns. The first is that governments throughout Europe are ramping up defence spending , with a notional 3pc of GDP the big target for most countries.
