Weak inflation, disappointing retail sales send Canadian dollar to a near two-week low Canada’s overall inflation rate in February edged up to 1.5 per cent but was below the central bank’s target for the second month in a row while January retail sales disappointed, sending the Canadian dollar down to a near two-week low on Friday. The Statistics Canada data underlined market expectations that the Bank of Canada, which raised interest rates a total of five times in 217 and 218, will stay on the sidelines until the economy recovers from a slowdown caused in part by low oil prices and a weaker than expected housing market. Although the inflation rate ticked up from the 1.4 per cent seen in January, it was still less than the Bank of Canada’s 2. per cent target. The bank’s closely-watched three measures of core inflation were also under 2. per cent.
