Gatwick has been the “missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle” for Jet2 , according to the airline's chief executive Steve Heapy, as the low-cost airline announced it would finally compete at the world's busiest single-runway airport. The Leeds-based airline, Britain's third-largest, has expanded rapidly in recent years, launching new services from Bournemouth, Luton and Liverpool in 2025. The move to Gatwick will mark its 14th base. Jet2holidays is also the UK's largest tour operator, a title it has held since overtaking Tui in 2023. So while Jet2 was always fairly tight-lipped on the notion of Gatwick in the lead-up to this announcement, the logical next step was to conquer the south-east. Ian Doubtfire, the managing director of Jet2, confessed at a press briefing: “Since we started Jet2 in 2003, my wish and desire has always been to come to this airport.” Next spring, that dream will come true.
