In this article Paying for extra legroom has become a familiar feature of flying economy. Still, a new analysis suggests the price of stretching out varies wildly by airline, and has moved sharply in both directions over the past decade. Research by Airport Parking and Hotels (APH) shows just how fragmented pricing has become. Fees now start from as little as £5 on some short-haul routes, but can climb to almost £200 on long-haul flights with premium carriers. Costs depend on factors such as route length, demand and seat location, and are usually cheapest when booked online at the time of ticket purchase. Extra-legroom seats, typically found in exit rows or at the front of economy cabins, offer more space but are sold separately from the base fare. APH's study compares what passengers paid in 2017 with typical prices in 2025 across major airlines, focusing on one-way economy tickets.
