The outage on Aug. 28 affected more than 700,000 passengers, the report released by the UK Civil Aviation Authority on Thursday said. According to the report, airlines and airports said warnings about the software issue were delayed on the day, leading to additional disruption for passengers. There also wasn't enough engagement from senior executives at NATS, the UK air traffic control service, after the event, the report found. For example, NATS chose to communicate the issue through an “old-fashioned teleconference platform” instead of a video call, the report said. The report said the outage was caused by an anomaly in NATS' software when processing an airline's flight plan from Los Angeles to Paris. The system as well as its secondary backup then shut down for safety.
