Stocks tumble, Treasuries rally on virus worries Volatility tightened its grip on global financial markets, with U.S. stocks plunging as much as 11 per cent, Treasuries rallying and Brent crude sinking below US$30 a barrel as economic activity around the world slows. The S&P 500 pared its decline to 7 per cent after earlier tripping a market-wide circuit breaker for the third time in a week. The market’s fear guage spiked toward levels last seen in the financial crisis. Treasury yields trimmed some of their advance with investors taking profits after dramatic moves from the Federal Reserve and other central banks bolstered fixed income. Hyper-turbulent financial markets continued their wild ride as investors try to assess the likely extent of the economic damage after countries around the world moved to combat the virus spread by virtually shutting down all social activity.
