Top picks: Kenvue Starbucks, Canadian National Railway MARKET OUTLOOK: Artificial intelligence and interest rates are seemingly the only two things that investors concern themselves with nowadays. One cannot go a day without some “expert” pitching in with their view on AI and one can find evidence and parallels in history to support both sides of the argument. But what is glaringly absent is any discussion over whether there is an AI race to be won? Investors seem as keen on interest rate cuts as the U.S. President. While helpful for liquidity, cuts in the Fed's overnight rate have done little to lower what is paid on U.S. borrowings (the 10-year yield today of four per cent is the same level as it was in July 2023, the time of the last rate hike). Perversely, if Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is seen as being “pushed” into lower rates, that might see long-term yields rising.
