Copper prices have popped 5% this week, as investors increase focus on supply risks with Chinese smelters agreeing to reduce production in an effort to combat losses and weak profits. The rally already had been fueled by tightening global supplies, driven mainly by last year's closure of a giant mine in Panama, with growing worries about production in Zambia, which is facing an El Niño-induced power crisis. Traders also may be starting to accept the idea that the worst of a global downturn is past , particularly for metals like copper that are used in electric vehicles and renewable energy.
