At this time last year, everyone was talking about how consumers were tired of bad news and wanted to “manifest optimism” about the future – and wanted retailers to help them in that quest. This year, the theme is more “embracing the messiness” – consumers found that just wanting things to be better didn't make them so, and have now moved on to a more 12-step method of getting out of their confidence malaise by first accepting where they are: in a messy time, with no clear positive end in sight. Unfortunately, where consumers go, retailers must follow. Which means, at a time when retailers are looking for any way to get benefit out of some of the long overdue tech refreshes that they are undoubtedly going to have to go through in the next few years, it is as unclear as it has ever been if consumers are going to pull back or keep spending.
