Maersk ( OTCPK:AMKAF , OTCPK:AMKBF ) says it will aim to have carbon neutral vessels commercially viable by 2030 by using energy sources such as biofuels and to cut its net carbon emissions to zero by 2050 . “The only possible way to achieve the so-much-needed decarbonization in our industry is by fully transforming to new carbon neutral fuels and supply chains,” says Maersk COO Soren Toft. Given the 20-25 years lifetime of a vessel, the industry would now have to start developing new types of ships that will be crossing the seas in 2050, Maersk says. Maersk is the world’s biggest container shipper; the shipping industry, which carries ~80% of global trade, accounts for 2.2% of carbon emissions, according to the UN’s International Maritime Organization.
