A Boeing 787-9 from Scoot, the low-cost airline owned by Singapore Airlines, has seats for 375 passengers. Yet when a Scoot 787-9 takes off from Singapore on March 11 bound for Nanjing in eastern China, it will have zero passengers onboard. The flight will still earn revenue: below the passenger cabin, the large freight compartments will transport goods as China ramps up economic output and supply chains regain order, indicating Asia – where the coronavirus first took hold – is beginning to look past the crisis that now grips North America and Europe. Freight has historically been a bellwether for near-future passenger demand trends.
