new agreement with Sumitomo Metal Mining Company, aimed at stepping up collaboration in the development and mass production of cathode materials for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) for electric vehicles (EVs). Toyota aims to launch a new battery electric vehicle (BEV) model powered by ASSBs in the 2027-2028 fiscal year. Toyota pointed out that ASSBs, primarily composed of a cathode, an anode, and a solid electrolyte, are next-generation batteries that offer major benefits such as smaller size, higher power output, and longer life compared with current liquid-based batteries that use electrolyte solutions. “When used in BEVs, all-solid-state batteries are expected to deliver enhanced performance, such as longer driving range, shorter charging times, and higher output,” the company added.
