Vincent Deluard, from StoneX, had predicted that US energy stocks would benefit from a push into Venezuela . Fast forward a few days and the unlikely has become reality: American oil majors are seeing their share prices shoot up. What happens next is anyone's guess but I'd counsel some caution. Geopolitics rarely has much impact, medium-to long-term, on markets. Backing up my caution, most international investors don't seem too fazed and nor should they be – what powers markets is a combination of a big idea and a way of making lots of money selling stuff long term. At the moment, that big idea is artificial intelligence (AI) The way AI makes money is to force businesses to buy Nvidia (and AMD and Broadcom) chips and then build data centres with lots of kit from the likes of Arista Networks.
