“Lando Norris better get the f—- out of the way because Max Verstappen is coming through in turn 1.” That's what I said to my friends who were with me and to my F1 group chat after Norris secured pole position in a very wet Las Vegas Grand Prix (LVGP) qualifying with Verstappen alongside in P2 and Piastri starting several places back. With a comfortable lead in the WDC and only three races left, Norris had everything to lose in trying to defend this position against the four-time champion and arch nemesis. Max had nothing to lose and everything to gain. In fact, he had to come out of turn 1 with the lead or else crash trying. And that's pretty much how it played out, except that Norris got a little too ambitious in his defense—trying to pull a Max Verstappen on Max Verstappen—and totally missed his braking point, which allowed both Verstappen and George Russell get by.
